It was quite a surprise to come across this ‘carving’. Somebody has taken a saw to this old, fire-scarred tree and artistically cut some pieces out. I’ve no idea what was being attempted here because this tree is in quite an isolated location and requires some effort to get to.
As we approached this termite mound we could see ‘black things’ crawling around the top.
The ‘black things’ turned out to be winged termites about to launch themselves in the breeze for destinations unknown.
Then, when really close up, we could also see soldier termites moving around the surface, perhaps ready to defend from intruders who would make use of the exit tunnels that have been opened for the emerging winged termites.
Looking like a scene near a native African village (to my imagination at least) we came across this patch of grass trees near a saddle on the ridge we were traversing.
